Tips For Keeping Cool This Summer

Tips For Keeping Cool This SummerBeat The Heat With These Tips

The summer is finally here, offering us all a much welcome reprieve from the harsh winter we experienced in Pennsylvania this year. Unfortunately, the thermometer can swing a bit too far in the opposite direction, leaving us sweltering. To help you keep cool this summer, use these tips.

  • To avoid creating more heat in the house, opt to cook food outside on the grill, dry your clothes on a wash line (they will dry fast in the heat!), keep lights turned off except when necessary, and keep your blinds drawn during daylight hours.
  • Take a look at your outdoor condenser. Sometimes, spring growth of plants can restrict airflow, so make sure the area around your outdoor unit is clear.
  • Swap out your air filter. If your filter is not clean, it will not only make your system work harder, it can also restrict cool air from getting into your home. Air filters should be changed every few months.

Protection By Your Pool: Summer Safety Tips

Pool Insurance Carlisle PAEnjoy A Stress-Free Summer With This Guide

As a pool owner, you look forward to the summer. Not only does it mean you get a reprieve from the harsh Pennsylvania winter we just experienced, it also means you can soak up some sun and relax in your own yard. So that you can enjoy your summer poolside without worry, implement these pool safety tips.

  • So that no one ever falls into your pool by accident, erect a perimeter fence around it that is at least four feet high and has a self-closing, self-latching gate.
  • Use touch supervision with small children. In other words, never be further than an arm’s reach away from those who are still learning to swim, even when they are using flotation devices.
  • Invest in plastic cups to use by the pool so no broken glass ever ends up poolside—or, worse yet, in the pool—where people are likely to be barefoot.
  • Keep flotation devices, reach poles, and a first aid kit where they can be easily access in an emergency.

Another crucial aspect of setting protections in place as a pool owner is ensuring your Carlisle homeowners insurance offers sufficient coverage. To talk to an insurance expert to ensure you have the policy you need, contact Miller Insurance Associates.

Getting Grilling? Use These Safety Tips

Fire Safety TipsHow To Grill Safely This Summer

With the extra warmth and longer days the summer offers, the last thing you want to do after a day in the office is head inside to get dinner ready. Fortunately, grilling offers you the opportunity to craft a nutritious meal for your family while enjoying some fresh air. Before you fire up your grill, though, review these safety tips.

  • Keep Your Distance: Ensure that your grill is at least ten feet away from your home, porch, or other structure that could catch flames. Also, check that there are no dry trees or shrubs nearby.
  • Clean Up Crew: After your meal is done, wait until the grill cools and clean your racks. It will only take you a minute to do, but can avoid a major flare up caused by residual fats and grease.
  • Stay Supervised: Never leave your grill unattended. If you need to step away for a minute, ask another competent adult to man the flames.

Should the worst happen and a fire break out, would you have the Pennsylvania homeowners insurance you need to rebuild without major expense to yourself? To set the right protections in place this summer and beyond, contact Miller Insurance Associates in Carlisle.

A Look At Lyme Disease

Lyme DiseaseRisk Is High In Pennsylvania

A recent study conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection found that the risk for Lyme disease is high in all 67 counties in Pennsylvania. This high risk is brought by the blacklegged tick—or deer tick—which was found in each county for the first time. This risk is not entirely new, though; Pennsylvania has reported the most cases of Lyme disease of any state in the country for the last five years.

These ticks carry and disseminate the organisms that are responsible for Lyme disease, which causes fatigue, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, and fever.

The best thing you and your loved ones can do to avoid this disease is check for ticks after spending time outdoors and shower within two hours of returning inside. If you have been bitten by a tick and are experiencing any of the above symptoms, seek medical treatment as this can help you avoid late-stage complications. A little extra care to avoid ticks when heading outdoors can serve you well this summer.
