What Protection Exists for My Vacation Home?

What Protection Exists for My Vacation Home?Your home away from home can be a treasured and indispensable possession that needs to be protected.

Maintenance for your vacation home is pretty much the same as it is with your primary residence. Yes, even if you only use that home for one or two weeks out of the year. There are a few reasons why you may need to take a few extra measures with your second home. As stated earlier, you likely only use your second home for vacation purposes only and seldom visit. And if your vacation home is like most, it is in the middle of nowhere with very few neighbors so if anything were to happen to it, no one would notice until it’s too late.

For that reason, and that reason alone, it is a good idea to have a local resident come check out the house every now and then to make sure that everything is going swell. If you leave the plumbing on (though we don’t recommend this), have someone come and run the water every four to six weeks. This will keep water from freezing or becoming stagnant and possibly causing damage to your pipes.

A regular check on the interior of the home is a pretty good idea as well. Wildlife may be using your home as much, if not more, as you do. Periodic inspections for vermin may help prevent a lot of damage and save some real money. Be careful, though! In real life, Baloo the bear may not be as friendly with you as he is with Mowgli.

Some other tips on how to reduce the chances of an accident are:

  • Turn the heat down (turn it off only if water is shut off and pipes, water heater, etc. are drained and anti-freeze is added to all sewerage traps)
  • Lock all doors, windows and points of entry using dead bolt type locks
  • Check the proper operation of your alarm system
  • Forward mail to your regular address
  • Remove all valuable items from your home
  • Turn off water connections to faucets, toilets, washer, water heater, dishwasher, etc.
  • Leave faucets open
