Outdoor Water Safety Tips You Should Know

Outdoor Water Safety

Beat the heat by enjoying the water safely this season.

Warm weather offers the perfect time to relax in a pool, by a lake, or on the ocean. Unfortunately, too many people are unaware of the dangers that bodies of water hold. Drowning is the fourth leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., claiming around 4,000 lives each year, according to the American Institute of Preventative Medicine.

Whether you’re enjoying the last few days of summer by a pool, stream, lake, or the sea, be sure that you keep in mind these safety tips.

Abide Rules
Near any body of water should be warning and safety signs, indicating who can use the water, when, and how. Review rules each year, and before embarking into the water to ensure that you and your family are safe.

Educate Users
All businesses and organizations should take steps to educate users about the rules and requirements of being near the water. This can be through a discussion or a written listing that you ask them to read. Better yet, have users sign a waiver indicating that they understand and assume the risk, that they will abide the rules, and that they indemnify you as the owner/operator. Remember that minors cannot sign on their own behalf.

Provide Lifeguards
If lifeguards are provided, make sure they are certified and are appropriately supervised. They should all be ready to respond to an emergency at a moment’s notice.

Ready Response Equipment
All emergency response equipment should be available and functioning. Perform a daily inventory as well as regular safety checks to ensure that this equipment is up to standard, should there be an incident and the equipment is needed.
