Factors That Help Your Insurer Determine Fault

Here are some of the things your insurer will rely on to determine fault after an accident.Factors That Help Your Insurer Determine Fault

While most car accidents are unintentional, your auto insurer still has to determine which driver was technically at fault.  As they attempt to piece together what happened, your insurer will take different things into consideration.  Here are some of the factors that they will use to help them determine fault.

Official Police Report

After an accident occurs, an official police report will be released revealing the police’s findings and what they believe occurred.  This report has the most influence on your auto insurer’s decision.  Your insurer places so much weight on their report because it tends to be more reliable and less biased than the accounts of the drivers that were involved in the crash.

Your Evidence

While important, the official police report isn’t the only piece of evidence that your insurer will consider.  They will also take into account the evidence you supply.  For instance, the photos that you take of the accident scene and the photos of your vehicle can be used to establish degree of fault, and can also back up your own account of what happened.

Remember, your insurance provider will work hard to establish fault as objectively and accurately as possible.  In the meantime, it’s important that you do not admit fault for the accident.  You should cooperate with the police and other driver, but you should not elaborate more than you are asked to.  Even if you are sure that you were the one at fault, let the police investigate for themselves.  It’s possible that the accident was actually caused by something you were unaware of.

These are some of the factors that your auto insurer will take into account as they attempt to establish fault.  Do you have more questions regarding you auto insurance coverage?  Don’t hesitate to contact us at Miller Carlisle Insurance Services.  Our dedicated professionals are ready to assist you with all your insurance needs.
